![]() ![]() The best Plex alternatives should also be able to stream video and information services. Streaming your own media content on a TV should be a standard feature, which is why most media centre interfaces are also designed to be used with smart TVs. Plex alternatives (as well as Plex itself) should not just allow playback on the original device, but should also be able to play through external devices. The user interface should make it easy for you to find and play back the content you want. The Roku is Plex, Emby only, the FireTV has Plex, Emby, MrMC (app store fork of Kodi) or Kodi itself via side-loading but firmware updates may lose it so for non-techies sticking to Plex, Emby MrMC would be better. The primary function of a media centre is to organise all media files (audio, video, and image) on the selected computer system in a clearly arranged format. Going with NFS is good non-techies for reading shares as it should always just work. You can get Plex, Emby servers from Ubuntu app store, Ubnutu can also generate NFS network shares which are much more reliable than SMB shares for Kodi though the NFS system does require a fixed IP address on the server or a router that can tag an IP to a MAC address. Teamviewer I think by default auto runs on startup, just login to your account for remote access. Use this to turn the ubuntu.iso into a bootable USB installer.ĭuring the setup process you can set it to automatic login, then once your on the desktop you can install Teamviewer if not from the Ubuntu app store then from their website. ![]() There are NAS dedicated OS you could go with like Openmediavault & FreeNAS that can be configured with remote access but I have not personally used them, something a lot easier may just be install Ubuntu desktop on the computers if this is just a simple deployment of system with 1 or 2 HDD's filled with videos, nothing fancy. I'm still running N40l with 1 SSD (WHS 2011) 4 HDD (4+3+3+2TB) + 1 HDD off ESATA port which I can only do with modded BIOS The pro version is better suited to use as server os. Just did'nt get round to using WIN 10 PRO. Did the above as experiment and does work. Hope this helps people who want to go this route. ![]() SATA EPS on all PORT - sets all Ports to be external SATA Ports SATA IDE Combined Mode - sets Ports 4 & 5 to use AHCI > SB SATA Configuration => and set the following: I have followed this N40L BIOS MOD Guide. I only have one WHS2011 license so I could use that on one, but what would be the best option for the other one? Any suggestions? I'm open to a Linux based OS so long as I can reliably get Teamviewer auto starting and running reliably on it.Īny suggestions, advice or warnings of things to avoid?Ĭlick to expand. There was an issue with win 10 and the ethernet adapter. I also have a couple of old Windows Server 2012 licenses, but when I've used Windows server in the passed I've found it harder to get Teamviewer running and getting access, as it's locked down more than Windows, plus it again feels like overkill to run Server on a Microserver. However, I've had a lot of problems with Windows 10 and the ethernet drivers and ended up using a USB ethernet adapter on it, which I don't really want to use, and Windows 10 on a Microserver seems a little overkill. So my main question is this what would be the best options for OS?Ĭurrently I have Windows Home Server 2011 on the N54l and Windows 10 on the N36l (which was just being used as a backup server). The only other thing I want to be able to install is BTSync/Resilio Sync, or something similar. One of the main things is I'll need to be able to remote in easily, whether it's Teamviewer or something else, it just needs to be something that will run at startup and is reliable. They'll also need a media playback client on an Amazon or Roku stick or something, so I'm thinking that my main options are Kodi, Emby or Plex (if Emby or Plex I won't be using transcoding). What I'd like to do is rebuild them as media servers for movie and TV show playback, one for my sister and one for my mum. I have two old Microservers, an N35l and an N54l that I'm not really using since build my new tower workstation and have a couple of NAS drives doing what the Microservers used to. ![]()
